What God Says About the Orphans

The cry of the orphans…

We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. (Lamentations 5:3, NIV)

Evil men take advantage of orphans…

Men move boundary stones; they pasture flocks they have stolen. They drive away the orphan's donkey and take the widow's ox in pledge. They thrust the needy from the path and force all the poor of the land into hiding. (Job 24:2-4, NIV)

You would even cast lots for the orphans and barter over your friend. (Job 6:27, NASB)

You have sent widows away empty, and the strength of the orphans has been crushed. Therefore snares surround you, and sudden dread terrifies you. (Job 22:9-10, NASB)

They drive away the donkeys of the orphans; They take the widow's ox for a pledge. (Job 24:3, NASB)

Others snatch the orphan from the breast, and against the poor they take a pledge. They cause the poor to go about naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry. (Job 24:9-10, NASB)

They crush Your people, O LORD, and afflict Your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger and murder the orphans. They have said, "The LORD does not see, nor does the God of Jacob pay heed." (Psalm 94:5-7, NASB)

But God’s justice covers the orphans…russia

They are fat, they are sleek, they also excel in deeds of wickedness; They do not plead the cause, the cause of the orphan, that they may prosper; and they do not defend the rights of the poor. 'Shall I not punish these people?' declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 5:28-29a, NASB)

Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.  (Exodus 22:22-23, NIV)

For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.  He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. (Deuteronomy 10:17-18, NASB)

You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow's garment in pledge. (Deuteronomy 24:17, NASB)

Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'  (Deuteronomy 27:19, NASB)

If I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless; If I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court, then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let it be broken off at the joint. For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things. (Job 31:17, 21-23, NIV)

Learn to do good; Seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. (Isaiah 1:17, NASB)

Woe to those who…deprive the needy of justice and rob the poor of My people of their rights, so that widows may be their spoil and that they may plunder the orphans. (Isaiah 10:1a, 2, NASB)

Do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place. (Jeremiah 22:3b, NASB)

thailandThus has the LORD of hosts said, 'Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor.' (Zechariah 7:9-10b, NASB)

“Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me," says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 3:5, NASB)

God’s promises His love and protection to the orphans…

Leave your orphans; I will protect their lives. Your widows too can trust in me. (Jeremiah 49:11, NIV) I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:18, NIV)

The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. (Psalm 10:14b, NASB)

And rejoice before the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name-you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows living among you. (Deuteronomy 16:11, NIV)

O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear to vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. (Psalm 10:17-18, NASB)

For in You the orphan finds mercy. (Hosea 14:2c, NASB)

God calls us to give and care for orphans…

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27, NIV)

At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. (Deuteronomy 14:28-29, NIV)

When you reap your harvest in your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.  (Deuteronomy 24:19, NASB)

When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. (Deuteronomy 24:20, NASB)

When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. (Deuteronomy 24:21, NASB)

When you have finished paying all the tithe of your increase in the third year, the year of tithing, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the orphan and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.  (Deuteronomy 26:12, NASB)

You shall say before the LORD your God, 'I have removed the sacred portion from my house, and also have given it to the Levite and the alien, the orphan and the widow, according to all Your commandments which You have commanded me; I have not transgressed or forgotten any of Your commandments. (Deuteronomy 26:13, NASB)

The blessing for being obedient to God’s command to care for the orphans…

For when the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it gave witness of me, because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the orphan who had no helper.  The blessing of the one ready to perish came upon me, and I made the widow's heart sing for joy. (Job 29:11-13, NASB)

For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your own ruin, then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. (Jeremiah 7:5-7, NASB)
